ALTON I. REED, age 85, of 212 Turkey Hill Road, Ithaca passed away Sunday, April 29, 2012 at the Beechtree Care Center after a short stay. Alton was born on August 12, 1926 in Ithaca son of the late Henry and Bessie Everhart Reed. Alton was graduated from Ithaca High School in 1944 and was a fourth generation dairy farmer until 1976 when he turned the farming operation over to his son, James.
He then became a real estate broker and established Alton Reed Real Estate and specialized in selling farms and rural properties. He was active in 4-H and FFA during his youth. In his later years he served on the Planning Board of the Town of Dryden and was a director of the Willow Glen Cemetery Association as well as holding various other community positions. Alton enjoyed many hobbies such as wood working, collecting arrow heads and operating his “Big Boys Toys” such as his backhoe, tractor and bull dozer. He was often found to be visiting friends in his pickup truck.
Survivors include his sons, James and Lynn Reed; his daughter, Susan Reed-Fanfoni; a son-in-law, Kenneth Fanfoni; his grandchildren, Kyle, Kevin, Jared, Lauren, Levi and Ben. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean M. Rothermich Reed and his sister, Helen Lewis Marshall
.Alton’s family will be present t o receive friends from 6 to 8 PM, Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main Street, Dryden. In accordance with Alton’s wishes after cremation his remains will be spread on the farm.
