Arthur W. McLaughlin, age 60, of Groton, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, January 26, 2018 after a courageous battle with myelofibrosis. Arthur, known as "Artie" by those close to him, was born on September 11, 1957, the middle child of the late Clara (Hiney) McLaughlin and Arthur McLaughlin, Sr. After graduating from Dryden High School in 1975, he began work at Napa Auto Parts. It was here that he began the first of many management roles, most notably serving the community as store manager at Napa for over 13 years and later as shop manager and foreman at RMS Gravel for 17 years. He married his best friend, Lori (Wise) McLaughlin in October 1980 and began a family in 1982. Their first child, Lee, was born with a congenital heart defect and survived only 4 months. Despite their deep sadness, Art and Lori were committed to building a family and had three healthy, happy children. Art worked hard, putting in long hours, but he never missed a family event-whether sitting quietly on the bottom bleacher at sporting events or providing a helping hand in the motocross pits, he was always there. An avid wrestling supporter, Art truly enjoyed following the Cornell team each year. Art was an incredibly special person-he was known for his quiet strength and kindness, and yet he was easy going, loved to laugh, and took great pleasure in seeing others smile. To know him was to love him, and he was dearly loved by many. Friends looked forward to hearing Art on his Harley coming by for a visit, because time with him was special. The loss of Art is felt intensely by family, friends and his community. Art is survived by his loving wife, Lori; his children, Amanda (Matt Sidle, and his son Jordan), Alison, and Eric; and granddaughter, Alayna. Art is also survived by his mother-in-law, Jane Devlen, a deeply treasured and influential person in his life; his sister, Linda (Calvin) Bush; brother, Daniel (Rhonda) McLaughlin; sister and brother in-law, Cindie and Charlie Armstrong; three nephews and several cousins. He was predeceased by son, Lee Edward McLaughlin; mother, Clara May (Hiney) McLaughlin; and father, Arthur Wells McLaughlin, Sr. Art fully entrusted his care to the management of Dr. Julie Campbell and her support team at Cayuga Hematology and Oncology Associates; family would like to reaffirm their tremendous gratitude to Dr. Campbell, CHOA staff and the support of Hospicare. At Art's request, a private, family service will be held with a celebration of life memorial held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Art's memory to the Cancer Resource Center of Ithaca, 612 West State Street, Ithaca, NY 14850 or Hospicare. 172 east King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850. Perkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
