ARTHUR R. SHAW,
age 83, of Dryden, NY, died Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at home. Art was born in Peruville, NY on March 25, 1923, a son of the late Bert and Mabel Edsall Shaw. After high school in Groton, he served in the US Army Air Force during WW II. Retired for several years now, Art primarily worked in welding equipment sales, traveling throughout the U.S., as well as real estate sales. As a young man, Art was a volunteer in the McLean Fire Co. and helped to build their first fire truck. For many years, he was a member of the leonard T. Spaulding Post 1134, American Legion, enjoying the companionship of many veterans. Art enjoyed reading, history, model trains, backyard bird watching, the NY Yankees, and being with family and friends, including his cat, Beau.
Arthur is survived by two daughters, Brenda Volpicelli and husband, Gary Volpicelli of Concord, NC and Sherry Shaw-Pickle and husband, Tom Pickle, of Dryden; two sisters, Dorothy Mowry (Floyd) and Betty Tesoriero (Ed); two grandchildren, Jenny and Brian Volpicelli; and, many other family members. He was predeceased by a sister, Mabel Sickmon (Ray, deceased) and a brother, Leo Shaw (Nancy). Art was married for many years to Dorothy Shaw of Dryden, the daughters’ mother. He shared later years of life with Ann Colbert-Nolan, who died five years ago. Ann’s children, John Nolan and Annie Wiiki, became extended family members for him. Art’s daughters would like to acknowledge the wonderful healthcare provided over the years by Drs. Husseini, Skezas, and Swisher of Ithaca, as well as the support offered by HOSPICARE and Palliative Services of Tompkins County.
Calling hours will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, September 24, at Perkins Funeral Home in Dryden, followed by a memorial service there at 4 PM. The family plans to have a private burial at Willow Glen Cemetery with the Dryden Veteran’s Memorial Home Ritual Team providing military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be directed to HOSPICARE and Palliative Services of Tompkins County, 172 East King Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850 or other charitable organizations. All arrangements are being handled by Perkins Funeral Home, 55 W. Main St., Dryden, NY.
