Barbara Adele Covert of 133 S. Van Dorn Road in Ithaca, NY, surrounded by family at home left this earthly dwelling May 17, 2012, to once again join her heavenly father and hold hands with Jimmy.
Barbara was born on April 21, 1940, to Paul and Mary Jane Vorhis. Barbara met her soul mate James Covert while living in the big white farm house across from the covered bridge in Newfield. Se also made many life long friends while there. Then shortly after high school, Barbara married James Covert in 1960. They bought a house at 1214 Dryden Road where they raised their family and eventually loved having their grandchildren there as much as possible. Barbara worked a few places before finding her true calling as a caretaker first helping raise many children in the area as a daycare provider and then the elderly as a home health aide and eventually at Longview until she retired. But even after retirement Barbara still was the caretaker. Graciously and lovingly she cared for first Jim’s mother, then her mother at Barbara’s home and last her husband of almost 50 years until his passing.
In January of 2011, Barbara was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. She fought a tough battle with many miracles being witnessed by her and her family during that time. In November of 2011, she moved up to her son’s home on Van Dorn Road. Eventually her family helped her get into a “brand new” home on the property where she was independent for a bit. Barbara loved her new home and was able to stay there until her last day on this earth. Her last week was surrounded by family, friends, and Hospice with lots of love and compassion.
Family meant everything to Barbara. Barbara is survived by a son, Scott Covert, his wife Cathy and their two sons, Steven and Gregory all of Enfield; a daughter, Brenda Shoemaker, her husband Butch and their two children Christopher and Chadd all of Trumansburg. She is also survived by her sisters Lynn Marshall and Kathy Seamon, two brothers David Vorhis and Donald Vorhis, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband James Covert, her mother Mary Jane Vorhis, and her father Paul Vorhis.
A memorial service will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday, May 23 at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden with David Smith presiding. Burial will follow in East Lawn Cemetery.
