Barbara L. Hill

d. September 19, 2007

Barbara L. Hill, formerly of Ithaca, passed into Heaven on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007 due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. Barb, daughter of Ralph and Bessie Hurd, was born on May 29, 1916, and raised in the Endicott area. She moved to Ithaca with her husband and two children in 1952. She is probably best remembered as the sales clerk in the fabric and pattern department of the old Rothchilds Department Store for 30 years.

Even after retiring, Barb remained active in the Ithaca community, volunteering her time with many organizations such as the Service League and RSVP. Never having learned to drive, and being widowed at an early age, she became an avid walker, logging in thousands of miles during her lifetime. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Barb was predeceased by many loved ones, including her husband Albert; daughter Nancy Palmer Page; grandson Andrew Apgar; brothers Ralph and Frank Hurd; and sister Helen Valabek. She is survived by her daughter Patricia (Kenneth) Apgar of Dryden (PO Box 196); three grandchildren, Robert Cullember of Dryden, Jennifer Nyhart and Matthew Palmer of Maryland; four great-grandchildren; sister in law, Jean Hurd; and several wonderful friends, including those at Walden Place and Cortland Care Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 21, 2007 with burial at Smith Valley Cemetery, Willseyville.

Contributions to any animal shelter or the Alzheimer’s Association, in lieu of flowers, would be an excellent way to honor Barb’s life. Perkins Funeral Home assisted the family.
