BEVERLY JO SURINE, age 63, of Wheeler Ave., Cortland and formerly of Freeville, NY passed away, Tuesday, Jan, 15, 2013 at the Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca after an extended illness. “Bev” was born May 22, 1949 in Ithaca, NY a daughter of Elmer Van Arkel and the late Natalie Hutchings Van Arkel. She was graduated from Ithaca High School and began a 40 year career with Cornell University in 1967 where she retired as a Graduate Field Representative in 2006.
Her husband, John Ray Surine, died May 19, 1998. She enjoyed shopping for antiques, gatherings with family and friends, reading and crossword puzzles. Years ago she was an avid bowler. Bev volunteered in many organizations throughout Cortland County. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Survivors include her father, Elmer (Beatrice Raponi) Van Arkel of Zephyrhills, FL; her companion, Kirk McKay of Cortland, her children, Jeffrey (Deborah) Surine of Freeville, Jeremy (Ellen) Surine of Raleigh, NC; siblings, Bonita (Alan) Ewing of Endwell, NY, Barbara (Peter) Van Arkel-Farsaci of Baldwinsville, NY; grandchildren, Jonathan, Olivia Joy and Addyson Surine; an aunt, Dorothy Boothroyd; nieces, nephews and many extended family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Friday, Jan. 18th at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. Phil Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Friends are invited to call from Friday from 11 AM to 1 PM at the funeral home, 55 West Main St., Dryden.
