BURTON ELIAS ROWE, Jr.,
age 91, of Virgil, NY passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Cortland Regional Medical Center. Born April 9, 1920 in Battle Creek, Iowa, he was a son of the late Burton E. and Nora Madsen Rowe, Sr.
Burton had been employed with Champion Sheet Metal in Cortland and Smith Corona, retiring in 1982. He was a former member of the Industrial Management Club. In 1957, he was instrumental in the formation of Greek Peak. He was later involved with the concessions at Greek Peak and Little York Lake from 1960 – 1964. In 1968 he was elected as the Virgil Town Supervisor for a two year term. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, pool player, member of the Marathon Senior Center and an enthusiastic horseshoe player until three years ago. During the 1960’s, he was President of the Marathon School PTA. He later had a cabin and Blueberry Farm on Lake Como from 1980 – 1990.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice M. Yarrison Rowe of Virgil; son, David Rowe of South Otselic; daughters, Jeanie (Leonard) Phillips of Marathon and Gail Rowe of Pittsburgh, PA; 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and numerous friends. He is predeceased by twin great grandsons and his siblings, Iver Rowe, Irene Hollenbeck, Marian Copeland and Doris Wood.
No public services are scheduled. Burial will be in Athens Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Marathon Emergency Squad, Marathon, NY 13803. www.perkinsfuneralhome.com
