CHARLES PETER WALSH
, age 82, of 41 Yellow Barn Road, Freeville, NY passed away Friday, March 12, 2010. Chuck was born Oct. 27, 1927 in Weehawken, NJ, son of the late Charles J. and Marguerite Walsh and adoptive mother/aunt, Kate Doyle.
He graduated from Marlboro High School and from Ithaca College, Summa Cum Laude. He was a bunker in the firehouse while attending college. Chuck achieved Masters Degrees at NYU and SUNY New Paltz. He served in the Pacific Theater with the US Navy during WWII aboard the USS Bennington. He began his teaching career in Marlboro, NY as a physical education teacher and later became a guidance counselor. Chuck was a beloved coach and referee for football, basketball and baseball in many schools throughout the Hudson Valley.
He spent most of his career at Hendrick Hudson High School, retiring in 1984 with many fond memories of the students and his colleagues. He began a second career in Vermont where he retired from Whitcomb High School, Bethel, VT as a guidance counselor. Chuck truly cared about others and always went out of his way to help. He influenced many lives through teaching, coaching and his counseling career. Over the years and even as recently as this winter, he received numerous letters expressing gratitude and appreciation from his students.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce at home, his children, Sharon (Robert) Palmer of Petaluma, CA, Richard (Maria) Walsh and Brian (Leeanne) Walsh of Montgomery, NY, Lauren Walsh of East Hampton, NY, Dr. Carla Walsh of Freeville, NY, Christine (William) Bressler of San Diego, CA; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Walsh of Huguenot, NY; fifteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Charles also leaves a cousin/brother, Myles “Jimmy” Doyle of Marlboro, NY. Charles was predeceased by a son, Charles Kevin Walsh in 1996 .
In honor of his life friends are invited to call from 5 to 8 PM Tuesday, March
16 at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 AM, Wednesday, March 17, 2010 in Holy Cross Church, 375 George Rd., Freeville, NY with Rev. Scott Kubinski officiating. Delayed burial with military honors will be in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Those wishing to remember Charles are asked to consider a memorial to the Charles P. Walsh Scholarship Fund for an outstanding college-bound senior at Whitcomb High School c/o Carroll Ketchum, P.O. Box 352, Bethel, VT 05032. He was a very special man who will be greatly missed.
