CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH COOKE EDMONDSON
- formerly of Etna and Dryden, NY, passed away at the age of 88 on Sunday, December 17, at the Cayuga Medical Center after a brief illness. Born on October 15, 1918, in Newport, RI, she was predeceased by her husband, Albert, in 2001. Charlotte graduated from Rhode Island State College in Kingston, RI, and continued her education at Martin Hall in Bristol, MA. Upon completion of her studies, she moved to Devreux, PA, to teach speech therapy. She returned to Martin Hall where she met Albert J. Edmondson and they were married on September 9, 1947, in Atlanta, GA. Charlotte and Albert moved to the Ithaca area to continue their studies at Ithaca College. Charlotte graduated with a BS in speech from IC in 1952. In 1953, she became the Director of the Cerebral Palsy Clinic in Ithaca, NY. During this time she was influential in organizing what was later to become the Special Children's Center. Charlotte and the family moved to Etna in 1957 where she and Albert remained for over 40 years. From 1957 to 1958 she taught English at the George Junior Republic in Freeville, NY. In 1959 Charlotte continued her career with the Cortland Madison BOCES. She served the Dryden, Marathon, McGraw, Cincinatus and Cortland schools as a speech therapist. Charlotte retired from teaching and later assisted Albert in his watch and clock repair business - The Village Time Shop - in Dryden, NY.
She was a member of the Etna Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School; was involved in Brownie and Girl Scouts in Etna; and enjoyed working at the Polling Stations in Etna, Freeville and Dryden for many years.
In May 2003, Charlotte moved to the Groton Residential Care Facility where she made many friends and appreciated the attentive care she received there.
Survivors include her son Richard J. Edmondson of Lansing, NY, and Julia C. (David) Mastroberti of Danby, grandchildren Jason and Jennifer Edmondson, Lisa (Jesse), Lauren and Eric Mastroberti, and a number of
neices and nephews.
Calling hours will be at 10 am on Friday, December 22, followed by a memorial service at 11 am, at Perkins Funeral Home, 55 Main Street, Dryden, NY. Private burial will follow.
