Stanfield Slocum of 92 West Main Street, Dryden, died on October 7, 2010, at the Oak Hill Manor Nursing Home at the age of 85. She was born in Glens Falls on December 25, 1924. Christine followed her Quaker father, the late Rev. Jesse A. Stanfield, and her mother, Vesta (Johnson) Stanfield, to Tidewater, Virginia, Baltimore, Indiana and Ohio. She graduated from Eastern High School, Baltimore, and Guilford College, Greensboro, NC. After a year as a youth counselor at the YWCA in Quincy, IL, Christine received her master’s degree in library science from the University of Illinoisand was employed in the university’s library where she met and married Robert B. Slocum, who was also on the library staff. The couple left Illinois when Robert accepted a position in the Cornell University Libraries in Ithaca NY. Christine worked for a year at the Cornell Public Library before moving to Dryden. When her two children reached middle school age, she returned to work, becoming an elementary school librarian in the Dryden public schools, followed by several years as librarian at Southworth Library in the village. She became a member of the newly formed Town of Dryden Historical Society and served a term as its president.

A memorial service will be held on October 24th, 2010 at 2pm at the

Christine came from a long Quaker background, but joined the First Presbyterian Church of Dryden, where was active with the Presbyterian Women. Among her other memberships were the Fortnightly Club and the Needle Club of Dryden. She especially enjoyed family camping trips to upper New England, Canada and New York State, canoe trips in the Adirondacks with friends from the church, Elder hostels at China Lake, Maine, West Virginia University and Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina. European travels in Germany, Austria, England, Scotland and Ireland were highlights. Hawaii, Virginia, western North Carolina and Charleston, South Carolina were also in her itinerary.

In retirement, Christine was an ardent reader of American and British novels, gave many volunteer hours to the work to the Dryden Historical Society and was very supportive of the Children’s Defense Fund, NYPIRG (New York Public Interest Research Group), the University of Illinois Library, Cornell Plantations, Cornell Ornithology Lab, National Trust for Historical Preservation, Guilford College, Friends Committee on National Legislation, Southworth Library, and the Dryden Kitchen Cupboard, among others.

Surviving Christine are her husband Robert B. Slocum of Dryden, son Robert S. Slocum of Dryden, daughter Kathryn Slocum Goodwin of Dobbs Ferry, son-in-law Robert Goodwin and grandson Graham Goodwin, a brother Rev. David O. Stanfield and his wife Helen (Lewis) of Greensboro North Carolina, sisters-in-law Mary Slocum of Holden, MA and Ann Nolan of Amherst, MA, nieces and nephews, including Judy, David E., Tom and Mary Stanfield, David and Jeffrey Slocum, Deborah Slocum Root of Westport CT, Roberta Gray of West Yarmouth MA, Marsha Bach-y-Rita of San Francisco, Francis Nolan of Wilmington, NC, Carol Reebenacker of Methuen, MA, Jeanne Salter of Irvine CA and many grandnieces and nephews..
