Malcolm Dayton, age 92, passed away November 14, 2012 at Cortland Regional Medical Center. He was born in Cortlandville May 5, 1920 to the late Claude and Bernice Dayton.Claude, known to family and close friends as “Mac” grew up on family farms in the Cortland/Homer area and on Stewarts Corners Road in Venice Center, Cayuga County.In the late 1930’s to early 1940’s Mac worked at Johnny’s Coffee Shop. Sometime after that he worked at the Rome Army Depot as a baker and at International Mills near Baldwinsville.
He worked for many years as a “plater” for SCM and retired from Smith Corona in the 1970’s. After “retirement” he worked for the DEC Green Thumb project. Claude married the late Amy (Halstead) Dayton in 1952 and adopted her son Alfred. His younger son, Donald was born the next year.
He is survived by sons Alfred Dayton of Bayshore, NY and Donald Dayton of Syracuse; his brothers, Merritt Dayton of Venice, FL and Richard (Patricia) Dayton of Ocala, FL and sister, Bette (Hugh) Worley of Lancaster, PA. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and a special grand-nephew, Richard Moore. The family wishes to thank Mac’s friends and caregivers at Cortland Housing Authority, Cortland Home Care, Greenbriar Home for Adults, the nurses and aides of the 2C Unit at Cortland Regional Medical Center. And special honors to Theresa Moore for her years of undying devotion and tireless support. Mac was a gentle, quiet soul and will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held at a future date at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Bird Cemetery in Locke, NY at that time.Perkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
