CURTIS R. SMITH, age 85
, formerly of Pendleton St., Cortland, NY passed away Monday, March 14, 2011 at the Hospicare residence in Ithaca, NY. Curtis was born July 4, 1925, in Wilkes-Barre, PA a son of the late Raymond and Hazel Lockwood Smith. A long time resident of Cortland, he served in the US Army in Europe during World War II with the Field Artillery and participated in the D-day invasion of Normandy and The Battle of the Bulge . His wife of 61, years, Edith Crumb Smith, survives. Mr. Smith was retired from the City of Cortland where he worked for 25 years as a Maintenance Mechanic. He was active in Amateur radio and enjoyed camping and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Edith C. Smith of Groton; his children, Cecile Robbins of Cortland, Coreva Goddard of Marathon, Klaron (Janice) Smith of Cortland; siblings, Peter (Linda) Allen of Castle Creek, Gary (Fannie) Allen of Kentucky and Dolores (Duane) Phillips of Cortland; his long time friend, Regina Canfield of Harford, NY; eight grandchildren and many great and great great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Richard Smith; grandchildren, Jason Smith, Christi and Tommy Robbins ; siblings, Leo H. Bacon, Cecile Vandecar, Shirley Rosen and Kenneth Allen.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Lloyd officiating. Burial will be delayed in Cortland Rural Cemetery. Friends are invited to call from 11 AM to 1 PM, Thursday, at the funeral home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY.
