David K. Hughes

June 5, 1936 — February 9, 2021

Dryden

It is with great sorrow that the family of David K. Hughes shares his passing. He has gained his angel wings.

He was born in Lansing, NY on June 5, 1936 to parents, Kenneth and Mary Farrell Hughes. He passed away February 9, 2021. His family includes his partner, Vivian Collins, his children, Susan Tuttle (Lowell), David Hughes, both of Houston, TX., Daniel Hughes (Brenda), TN., Stacy Hughes (Alberta), West Winfield, NY; siblings, Mary (Luffabuff) (Dayya) Stanton, Peter Hughes both of Ithaca, NY, Carol Hardesty, Trumansburg, NY, Lucy Foote (Harry), of SC., Larry Hughes (Gussie) (Judy), NC; grandchildren, Ryan, Joshua, and Joseph; great grandchild,  Emma June and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, James (Jimmie) and sister, Katherine (Burgie) Kimpland.

As a teenager he held down 3 jobs to help support his family.  Starting with delivering pies in the morning, then to the sport shop, and on to Joe’s Restaurant in the evening.  He graduated from Ithaca High School , class of 1954. He was a life member of the Elk’s, loved watching slow pitch games, and was the life of the party on golf trips.
As a young boy Dave made up nicknames for his siblings that followed them to this day.  A car salesman most his life he had that gift to win people over and make you feel at home sharing stories with what felt like a long-time friend.   Telling the difference between the truth, and malarkey, sometimes difficult, but his heart was always in the right place.  We have had many people, whose lives he touched, tell us what a kind and good person he was. He attended exercise classes through Silver Sneakers, was a member of the Dryden Methodist Church where he loved singing with the choir.  He enjoyed his many trips with family out of NYS and loved seeing Ireland, Hawaii, Alaska and visiting his family often.  He especially enjoyed Texas ball games and would tell us all about the fun he had.

Memorial services will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Perkins Funeral Home, 55 W. Main St., Dryden, NY with Pastor Pam Carey officiating.

Donation may be made to your favorite charity in David's memory.

Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.

And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...
