Delbert W. Hanson of Berkshire died Saturday Sept.6, 2014 at his home. Born May 22, 1925 to Delbert W. and Edna P. Hanson in Johnstown, PA., thereafter moved to Ithaca during grade school. He was a graduate of Ithaca High School and served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 , active duty World War II and the US Naval Reserve from 1949-1952, called up for the Korean War.
On January 24, 1946 he married Marian Davis in Slaterville Springs, NY. He was predeceased by his parents, his sons Steven O. Hanson and D. Walter Hanson III and his grandson Sean Andrew Hanson.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marian Hanson of Berkshire and his sister Eugenia Hadlock of Syracuse, NY. Also surviving are his son Andrew (Julie) of Berkshire, his daughters Susan (Richard) Sears of Easton, MD and Laurie (Doug) Arnold of Dryden, NY and daughter-in-law Susan Hanson of Berkshire, NY. He has ten surviving grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He also leaves his devoted dog Frankie.
Delbert held many jobs over his lifetime of work. He also enjoyed leisure activities which included a fishing camp on the St. Lawrence River and camping trips to locations in the US including several to Alaska. Delbert was a wonderful woodworker and wood carver. He was a member of the Catatonk Wood Carvers Club in Candor, NY. Delbert and Marian are Charter Members of the Slaterville Fire Department.
Per Delbert?s wishes there will be no services. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. Arrangements will be handled by Perkins Funeral Home of Dryden, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory and honor to the Slaterville Fire Department or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
