DENBY BLAND SPONAUGLE, age 89, of 355 Creamery Road, Harford and formerly of Freeville and Cortland, passed away Friday, Sept. 10, 2010 at home. Mr. Sponaugle was born Oct. 10, 1920 in Blodgett Mills, NY a son of the late Don and Eva Bland Sponaugle. He was raised and educated in Freeville and on June 26, 1941 was married to the former Beatrice Margaret Marion in Freeville. Mr. & Mrs. Sponaugle resided in Freeville for 35 years before relocating to Stupke Road, Cortland where they made their home until 2007. Beatrice passed away April 14, 2009. He served honorably in the US Army during WW II and then was employed at Smith Corona as a supervisor prior to retirement. Denby was a member of the United Methodist Church of Freeville and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his son, Larry (Jane) Sponaugle of Dryden; his daughter, Peggy (Ernest) Zierler of Zephyrhills, FL; grandchildren, Randy Sponaugle, Teresa Lovelace, Mark Leonard and Matthew Karschner; great-grandchildren, Lexie Lovelace, Monica Leonard, Nicholas Leonard, Jade Karschner, Shyanne Lovelace and Blake Sponaugle; a brother, Dorr (Betty) Sponaugle of Cortland; a sister, Rena Moore of Zephyrhills, FL; nieces and nephews. Sisters, Wilda Saulsbury and Rena Moore passed away earlier.
Funeral services will be at 2 PM Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010 at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden with Rev. Dale Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Cemetery, Dryden where members of the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team will provide military honors.
