Dorothy E. Carroll,
86 of Oak Ridge, TN passed away on May 16, 2012 at Courtyards of Briarcliff in Oak Ridge. Preceding her in death were her parents, Judge H. Bradley Carroll and Edna Weilert Carroll of Rochester, NY; brother, George G. Carroll; sisters, E. Patricia Stockmaster and Mary Carroll. Born in Rochester, NY,
Dorothy went to school at St. Ambrose Elementary School then went to East High School in Rochester. After high school she joined the Sisters of Saint Joseph and went to Nazareth College of Nursing, where she received her bachelor’s nursing degree. One of her first assignments as a new nurse was in Selma, Alabama. She cherished her memories of working in a southern hospital all her life.
Eventually, leaving the religious life in 1964, she moved to Ithaca, NY with a longtime friend, Jean Rogers and her children, where she worked at the Cayuga Medical Center as a Nursing Supervisor for more than 23 years.
After retiring in 1987 she did some traveling to London, England, the west coast to visit with her sister who lived in Washington State, Maine, Cape Cod, & Florida with Jean’s children in east Tennessee and Kentucky. With the death of her lifelong friend, Jean in 2006, Dorothy moved to Oak Ridge to benear Jean’s daughter, Katie. In 2011 she went into Courtyards Briarcliff where shemade many new friends. She loved being there and everyone loved having her around.
The funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oak Ridge, TN onMonday, 11 AM with Father Bede Aboh officiating. A committal service will be held at11 AM, Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Calvary Cemetery, Floral Ave., Ithaca, NY withRev. Leo Reinhardt officiating.
