Eleanor M. Monroe, age 87, of Newark Valley, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2018 at the United Methodist Home in Johnson City, N.Y., after a long illness. Eleanor was born November 18, 1930, the youngest of four daughters of the late Helen Elizabeth Steele and Dr. Robert Asa McKinney, DVM, of Dryden, N.Y. She was graduated from Dryden High School in 1948 as salutatorian of her class. She attended SUNY Cortland and in 1951 was married to Richard F. Monroe; they were married for 18 years. A longtime resident of Newark Valley, she worked at the Tioga County Department of Social Services from 1972 to 1995, advancing from clerk-typist to deputy commissioner, seeking training in computer science and helping to computerize the department. Upon retirement she was presented with a resolution from the Tioga County Legislature honoring her contributions. During her career and in retirement she was active in the Owego Business & Professional Women’s Club. Eleanor was a member of the Newark Valley United Church of Christ (formerly First Congregational Church) for over 60 years and served the church in many capacities, ranging from typist and Sunday School teacher to council moderator. She was active in various civic organizations and was a candidate for Tioga County Legislator in 2006. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, music, and spending time with her sons and their families. A devoted mother and grandmother, she is survived by her sister, Joyce Perkins, Dryden, N.Y.; son John (Ann) Monroe, Mexico, N.Y., their children Jennifer (Collin Barrett), Michael, Catrina, Gary and Salena, and grandson Trevor; son Mark (Susan) Monroe, Ossining, N.Y., their children Stephen, Amy and Patrick; son Scott Monroe, Charlottesville, Va. and daughter-in-law Linda Monroe, their children Ryan and Kyle and granddaughter Hermione; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Carolyn M. Williams and Frances Mary Schutt. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on May 5, 2018 at the Newark Valley United Church of Christ with Rev. J.K. Boodley officiating, with burial following in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Newark Valley United Church of Christ, 32 S.
