Emory G. Bromsted,
90, passed away peacefully at the Cortland Regional Hospital on Thursday, April 7th. He was born and raised in Oakfield, NY, the son of the late Edward and Nina Bromsted. He attended Geneseo State Teachers College where he received a B.A. degree, and later obtained his Master’s Degree from Columbia University.
Mr. Bromsted began his teaching career in DeRuyter and in 1941 moved to Huntington, Long Island where he taught Jr. High special education classes and later became principal at both Toaz and Simpson Junior High Schools. While at Toaz he met and married Jane Maxon. They were married for 49 years. He retired in 1975 and he and Jane moved to Jekyll Island, Georgia. He loved taking long walks on the beach, biking and playing tennis. He and Jane spent time entertaining friends around their pool, teaching adults to read as literacy volunteers, and taking cruises to various ports around the world.
Emory moved to Cortand in 2006 to be closer to his family. In his later years he enjoyed solving the New York Times crossword puzzles, hearing from former students and staff members, and keeping everyone amused with his quick wit and sense of humor.
Mr. Bromsted is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Michael Dick, and his beloved granddaughter, Emily. He is also survives by several nieces, a nephew and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, and his sister, Marie Eberman.
At Emory’s request there will be no calling hours. A graveside service and burial will take place during the summer.
