H. Perine, age 84, of Cortland, NY formerly of Dryden, passed away Monday, July 2, 2012 at Misty Glen in Cortland Memorial Nursing Home. Ernie, as he was known, was born in Staten Island, NY on October 12, 1927. He played professional baseball for the New Orleans Pelicans. He traveled the world while in the Navy during WW II and was stationed in Hawaii. Ernie came back to live in SI and met and married Hildegarde Schuck.

He worked for the US Postal Service in Brooklyn and then transferred to Syracuse. He retired from the Ithaca Post Office after 42 years. During his retirement he enjoyed driving a Dryden school bus. He enjoyed watching and cheering his children on while playing sports. He loved spending time with his family and friends and was frequently recognized at the local watering holes. Ernie never turned down a good shot of Jameson's while being a member of the Ithaca Elks and Dryden VFW. He loved dining out for his favorite meal, linguine and clam sauce, and for dessert.bread pudding or Purity coconut ice cream. Also, he was Frank Sinatra's biggest fan. His favorite past time was spoiling his grandkids with chocolate bars and other sweet treats. And he couldn't stop himself from buying endless presents for them at Christmas. He was an avid sports fan, specifically his Yankees, Giants and 'Cuse. During the summer you could find Ernie boating and fishing on Cayuga and Skaneateles lakes and checking his numerous lottery tickets. He loved to vacation in Cape Cod and Atlantic City to work on his tan.

Everyone loved Ernie and he will be missed immensely especially by his children, Bruce (Debra) Perine of Marathon, NY, Doug (Jennifer) Perine of Cortland, NY, Carl (Stephanie) Perine of Ithaca, NY, Peter (Noreen) Perine of Seneca Falls, NY and Catherine (John) Wiiki of Ithaca, NY; eleven grandchildren; sister, Patricia Matera of Jamesburg, NJ; brother, Wayne (Jacquelyn) Perine of Staten Island, NY; sister-in-law, Connie (Paul) Ciliento of Staten Island, NY and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Hildegarde, his brother, Robert Perine, sister, Judy (George) Gulliksen and brother-in-law, John Matera

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Friday, July 6,

2012 at Holy Cross Church, George Road, Freeville, NY with Rev. Malachy Eloo Nwosu officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Dryden Veteran's Memorial Home Ritual Team will follow at Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Friends may call from 4-6 pm Thursday at Perkins Funeral Home, 55 W. Main St., Dryden, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 13 Beech St., Johnson City, NY 13790.
