Florence Iona Blodgett

Florence Iona Blodgett, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 8, 2025. She was 90 years old.

The daughter of the late Harold and Nina Darling, she was born in Haverhill, NH on January 6, 1935. Florence was predeceased by her husband Walter L. Blodgett, and her son Walter L. Blodgett, Jr. as well as her parents and brothers Harold Darling, Dale Darling, and Donald Darling. She leaves behind daughters Florence N. Whitford (Martin), June E. Feller (Jeffrey), Patricia D. Van Buren, and Mary G. Nann. Florence also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, her sisters Madeline Dana, and Zoe (James) Downing, her brother Wendell Darling, and many nieces and nephews who all loved her dearly.

Raised in Groton, VT, Florence completed high school in 1952 and then moved on to college at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. In September 1953, she married her husband Walter and they moved to Freeville, NY to begin their life together. They were married for 70 years.

Florence was deeply involved in church her whole life. She started as a child in a little Methodist church in Groton, VT where she earned her way to summer camp by memorizing Bible verses. As a young woman and throughout her life she was dedicated to children’s ministries. She loved singing in the choir and with her family, she played piano with feeling and enthusiasm, and she was always in the kitchen showing her love through service and the greatest food. The best mother to her children and many who were not technically her children, but were still hers to love and who loved her. A good friend to many, she loved playing cards and games and truly treasured her time with her friends. A quiet, steadfast, devoted woman of faith and love. She will be deeply missed.

A service in celebration of Florence’s life will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Brooktondale Baptist Church, 2311 Slaterville Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850.
