Floyd Edwin Morter, Jr., 89, of Canton, NY and Punta Gorda, FL passed away peacefully in Florida on February 20, 2016. His beloved family was at his bedside. He was born in Ithaca, NY on January 12, 1927, son of Gertrude and Floyd E. Morter, Sr. Floyd was raised on a farm in Ithaca, NY. He graduated from Cornell University and received his masters in Education from St. Lawrence University. Floyd was the Director of the St. Lawrence County Cooperative Extension and was the 4-H Agent and director of 4-H Camp Overlook until he retired. He married his beloved wife, Ella Curtis Morter, on July 9, 1955 at the Beech Plains Church in West Pierrepont, NY. Together they raised their family in Canton, NY. Upon retirement Floyd and Ella split their time between Florida and New York. Floyd was the past president of Canton Rotary, St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and the Canton Central School Board of Education. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church. Floyd enjoyed gardening, camping, reading, boxer dogs, chocolate, and humor. Above all, he loved his family. Floyd is survived by Ella, his dear wife of 61 years, and his seven children, Susan (Charles) Dean, Floyd David (Roxanne) Morter, Zoe (Daniel) Schwartz, Sharon Sharrow, Nancy (Matthew) McKinley, Lori (David) Flodman, and Linda (Jonathan) Riek. He also leaves 20 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and his sister, Anne Giaimo. In addition to his parents, Floyd was predeceased by his sisters Genevieve and Vivian. There was a prayer gathering held at Burnt Store Presbyterian Church on February 20, 2016. There is a memorial service planned for the spring in New York State. A private burial will be in Dryden, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canton Rotary Club (Memo line: Floyd Morter Scholarship Fund).
