Frederick Philip Schwarz, the second son of Erika and Henry Schwarz, was born in Bridgeport, CT, on October 24, 1943 and passed away September 9, 2017 at Kendal of Ithaca. He grew up in Stratford, CT, and graduated in 1965 from Bridgeport University where he majored in chemistry. Fred went on to earn a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at Cornell University in 1970. He and Mary Sue Kollman were married in 1968. The couple have three children, Jennifer, Emily and Carolyn. Fred liked to spend his free time working on home renovation projects and reading non-fiction books on military histories.

Dr. Schwarz's doctoral work was in the field of mass spectrometry. He held postdoctoral positions at Harvard University and the University of Washington. Fred began working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD, in 1972. Dr. Schwarz published over 100 scientific papers during his 38 year career. In 1989, he joined CARB (the Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology), a collaboration between NIST, the University of Maryland and the private sector. In November 2000, Dr. Schwarz was presented with the Bronze Medal by the Department of Commerce for superior Federal Service. This award was given for development and application of biological and calorimetric studies to investigate molecular recognition processes critical for biotechnology. In 2008, he was appointed a CARB Fellow for his scientific contributions and institutional leadership.

After retiring, Fred and Mary Sue moved to Ithaca, NY, in June 2009. He enjoyed tutoring middle school students, attending the men's City Club and taught a semester at TC3. Fred is survived by his wife, his three daughters, seven grandchildren (Lucy, Eve, Elsa, Kollman, Thea, Hazel, and Maxwell), a brother (R. Marc Schwarz), and three son-in-laws (David, Russell, and Stephen).
