Helen Wilma (Genung) Barnes, 92 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Helen was born on July 23, 1924 to Aaron Howard and Alice Hughes Genung of Ellis Hollow where she lived until her marriage to William H. Barnes in 1944. She was a 1943 graduate of Ithaca High School.
Helen worked for Security Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Ithaca until her retirement in 1985. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, sewing, and crafting of all kinds, as well as home canning.
She is survived by five daughters, Charlotte L. (Joel) Evans of Sieverville, TN, Helen L. (Gary) Hurlbutt of Dryden, Yvonne M. (David) McFall of Dryden, Catherine L. (James) White of Trumansburg, and Dawn A. (Geoffrey) Potter of Harford, 42 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, and 44 great-great grandchildren. Helen is also survived by two sisters, Edith Henry of Big Run, Pennsylvnia, and Marion Dawson of Flint, Michigan. Also, a brother, Clarence Genung of Groton, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. Her family is also indebted to her loving and caring aide, Kalea Farr of Marathon who took care of her during her final months. Helen was predeceased by an infant daughter, Kay Diane Barnes, two brothers, Wilbur Genung of Slaterville and Warren "Buster" Genung of Ithaca.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 13 from 4-6PM at Perkins Funeral Home, Main Street, Dryden. Funeral services will be at Noon on Saturday, January 14 at Calvary Baptist Church, Route 38, Harford with the Reverand Samual Larkin officiating. Burial will take place at Caroline Grove Cemetery in Caroline.
