HERBERT A. BRECHT , age, 73, of 71 Beam Hill Road, Dryden, NY died

at home on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006. "Herb" was born December 7,

1932 at Dryden a son of the late Herbert Wm. and Violet Hamilton Brecht. He was graduated from Dryden High School in 1950 and served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954. On March 28th, 1958 he was married to the former Shirley Haskins in Dryden. Herb was trained in the Army as a mechanic and pursued those endeavors on Rt. 79 in Caroline and later opened the American Gas Station on Main St. in Dryden. His station later changed names to Chevron and Amoco. Later he operated Brecht’s Towing with his son, Bruce, and was employed at the Dryden School Bus Garage as a driver/mechanic. In retirement he delivered the Ithaca Journal the "East Hill" neighborhood of Ithaca. Herb was a member of the Dryden Fire Department. Herb was a likeable and talented mechanic who will be missed by many friends and acquaintances.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Shirley A. Brecht of Dryden; his children, Linda B. (Michael) Moore of Groton, Jane M. (David) Pealo of Etna and Bruce W. (Brenda) Brecht of Dryden; two sisters, Ardeth (Paul) Klofkorn of Adrian, MI and Irene Hunter of Ithaca his half brothers, William (Bonnie) Brecht of Arkansas and John Brecht of Brooktondale, NY; half-sisters, Patricia (Justin) Chaffin of Ithaca, Darlene Mack of Lansing and Barbara (Rev. Robert) Johnson of Richford; grandchildren, Jared and Amy Moore, Robert Pealo, Brandy (Harold) Lobdell, Austin and Emilee Brecht; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Amber, Tiffany and Harold Lobdell, Jr.; nieces; nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his step-mother, Jessie Brecht.

Memorial services will be at 8 PM Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Austin officiating. Burial will be private and at a later date. Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are directed to the Dryden Fire Dept., P.O. Box 397, Dryden, NY 13053 or the charity of one’s choice.
