Herbert E. Broadwell

Known as "Coach" to Ithaca College students and his faculty colleagues, Herbert Broadwell passed away on December 8 after a long illness. He was born on November 18, 1917, son of the late Horace and Emma Broadwell of Liverpool, NY. Herb is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Dorothy, a daughter, Judi Brownell (Gary), and two grandsons, Conor and Cody. He also has a brother, James Broadwell (Eve), and a sister, Ruth Tubbert. An older brother, Roy (Eve), passed away in 1998.

Herb’s passion for athletics was evident throughout his career. A graduate of choice.

In
Indiana University, he won the state Golden Gloves boxing championship and was an accomplished gymnast. A member of the physical education department at Ithaca College from 1947 to 1983, he coached golf, wrestling, freshman football, and other individual sports. He is a member of the New York State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame and, in 1989, Herb was inducted into the Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his "many years of service to the Ithaca College athletic program and its athletes."

In addition to developing young athletes, Herb continued to participate in sports and devoted much of his free time to perfecting his golf game. He won both the Tompkins County and the Ithaca Country Club golf championships. Both of his grandsons benefitted from his expertise in golf, tennis, and other sports. He derived great pleasure from watching their little league games and supporting their numerous scholastic and sports activities.

Herb served as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, at Perkins Funeral Home on 55 West Main Street, Dryden, with Rev David Robinson officiating. A calling hour will be held from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Friends are invited to a reception following the service at the home of Margaret and Bob Lorenzen, 9 James Street, Dryden. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
