JOHN M. BAYS,
age 76, of 3011 NYS Rt. 215, Cortland, NY (Town of Virgil) passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 30, 2008. John was a graduate of Virgil Central School and was a 50 year member of the Virgil Fire Department. He owned and operated his own dairy farm for over 35 years and retired from the Cornell Teaching and Research Center. John was an Agway Committee Person. He was a graduate of the Eastern Breeders School and was an ASCS Committeman. He also was a member of the Virgil Methodist Church and the Cortland County Democratic Committee. John was predeceased by his parents, Rupert and Katherine Peck Bays; and his brothers, Robert and Burton Bays.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Delores M. (Lease) Bays; a daughter, Vicki (Terry) Zirbel; grandchildren, Chad (Angela) Zirbel, Sean (Heather) Zirbel, Torrie (Chris) Godwin; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, DaniMaree, Jessie, Kayelee, Wyatt, Joseph and Anthony all of Zephyrhills, FL; two sisters, Ruth Bays Gibson of Cortland and Kathleen Bays Thoman of Deland, FL; a sister-in-law, Frances Bays of Virgil; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. Nancy Rehkugler officiating. Burial will follow in Virgil Rural Cemetery. Friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday and from 12 to 1 PM Wednesday at the funeral home, 55 West Main St., Dryden. Those wishing to remember Mr. Bays may consider a memorial to the Virgil Fire Dept. 1195 West State Rd., Cortland or the Virgil United Methodist Church, 1196 Church St., Cortland, NY 13045.
