John Henry Evener, Sr.,
age 86, of 200 West South St., Groton, NY passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center. John was born Nov. 13, 1923, one of fourteen children of William and Mildred Murphy Evener. He was graduated from Union-Endicott High School and entered the US Army serving in the Pacific Theater during WW II in the #1877th Engineers Aviation Battalion. When returning from military service he met Sarah Ruth Canfield and was married on June 28th, 1946. The Evener’s celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this past June. John was employed by Gutchess Lumber Co. for 40 years. He was life member of the Dryden Township Post #8158 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid NY Yankees fan and enjoyed the actor John Wayne and enjoyed reading Louis Lamour and Zane Gray books. John was a devoted husband and father who loved his family deeply.
Survivors include his loving wife, Sarah Ruth Evener of Groton; sons, John Jr. (Karen) of Hornell, NY, James (Wahneta) of Summer Hill, Charles (Louise) of Groton, Scott (Phyllis) of Homer and Rick (Julie) of McGraw; his siblings, Madeline, William, Kay, Linda, Nancy, Sharon, Virginia, Mary Lou; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by a son, Robert who died in 1952 and siblings, Thelma, Shirley, Howard, Kenneth and Gerald.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, July 17 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. Sam Neno officiating. Burial with military honors provided by members of the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team will follow in Highland Cemetery, Richford. Friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 PM Friday at the funeral home, 55 West Main St., Dryden.
