John Albert Heslop, 89, of Newfield, NY passed away on May 18, 2017 at the Masonic Care Community in Utica, NY. He was born January 5, 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of the late John Henry and Alice May Evans Heslop.
He provided for his family as a Rural Mail Carrier in Newfield, chef at Joe's Restaurant in Ithaca and also worked for Newfield Central School as clerk and treasurer. A WWII veteran he served in the US Navy June 1945 - August 1946. He was a life-long lover of horses and owned more than 20 horses. He was a 4-H leader for many years and participated in horse endurance competitions all over the North East.
Al joined King Hiram Lodge #784 F&AM in 1959. He was Master of King Hiram Lodge in 1969 & 1988, District Deputy Grand Master in 1984, and Assistant Grand Lecturer for 4 years. He received the Hobasco Lodge Mason of the year award in 1996. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Newfield, NY. Al quietly worshipped and served God and was an example to his family. He taught them honesty, integrity, hard work, patriotism, service and love of family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Heslop residing with their daughter, Melanie and Tony Pelerossi in Rome, NY; daughter, Melinda Heslop of Sherman, CT; 5 sons, Robert Heslop of Aurora, NY; John & Elizabeth Heslop of E. Syracuse NY; Pete & Liz Heslop of Midvale, UT; Steve Heslop of Ithaca, NY; Tim Heslop of Newfield, NY; sister, Bibi & Howard Kidder of Arlington, VA; 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Al is predeceased by brothers, Henry and Edward, and sister, Joan.
Friends are invited to call from 4-6 pm, Friday, May 26, 2017 at Perkins Funeral Home followed by Military Honors and Masonic services at 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brotherhood Fund, Grand Lodge of NY, 71 West 23rd St., New York, NY 10010-4149.
