John Young

John Young, age 89, of 12 Mill St., Dryden, NY died at his home March 30, 2016 surrounded by his wife and children. He was born September 19, 1926 in Gloversville, NY.
After serving in the US Navy during WWII, he attended Ithaca College where he received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and later his Master's degree.
Mr. Young began his teaching and coaching career at Goshen Central School in 1951. As Athletic Director, he coached many successful sports teams, most notably football teams. In 1966, he was hired at Dryden Central School District as Athletic Director where he coached the 1969 IAC Championship football team. He became Dryden's first Dean of Students in 1970.
In 1972, he joined the Cornell University football staff as coach of the freshman football team and then as defensive coordinator of the 150's team, now known as the Sprint Football.
John was a caring husband, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. His family was one of his proudest achievements. Known to many as "Coach", he maintained close contact with many of his players who became close friends and part of his extended family. He was a member of the Dryden Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Gretchen Anne, his 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, April 5 from 5-7 PM at Perkins Funeral Home, 55 W. Main St. Dryden, NY and Wednesday, April 6 from 12 noon - 1 PM at The First Presbyterian Church, 42 North Main St. followed by funeral service at 1 PM. Burial, with Military Honors provided by members of the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team, will be in Green Hills Cemetery, Dryden.
