Judy MacNeil, 81, of Freeville, New York, passed away peacefully in her home on Dec. 29, 2024, surrounded by family.
The daughter of James and Elizabeth (Fey) Mulberry, Judy was born in Syracuse, New York, on October 14, 1943, and graduated from Moravia High School.
The oldest of six children, Judy grew up surrounded by family, and was a caring and beloved big sister to her siblings. She married her high school sweetheart, Jim MacNeil, on April 4, 1964, and they were inseparable for 58 years, until his death in 2023. Their love, devotion and affection for each other was an inspiration to all who knew them. Judy was Jim’s biggest fan, and was always by his side to cheer for and support him, and their daily nature walks—hand in hand—were a treasured tradition.
They raised their three children in surroundings full of laughter and joy, and Judy was truly the heart and soul of their happy home. She was a dedicated, hands-on mother, and later doted on her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
Her love for children was a constant in her life, and the young people she cared for during her decades of service as a babysitter, daycare provider and mentor is perhaps her greatest legacy. Countless children were impacted by her gentle and nurturing spirit, and consider themselves lucky to have been guided by Judy during their early years.
A devout Catholic, Judy cherished her faith, and she lived her life in humble service to those around her. Always ready to offer a helping hand, she worked tirelessly behind the scenes whenever needed, never taking credit. She was a member of Holy Cross Church in Freeville for more than 50 years, and took part in many of the outreach programs of her parish community.
Judy was a voracious reader, and also had a passion for cooking and baking. Her kitchen was always warm and inviting, and her ever-present chocolate muffins and M&M cookies were legendary among children and grown-ups alike. Her life-long love for animals—especially dogs—was matched only by the love they had for her.
Above all, Judy is remembered by all who knew her as a smart, funny, and generous friend. Her quick sense of humor and spirit of fun always lit up a room, and her kindness and insightful compassion made everyone in her presence feel special.
Judy was preceded in death by her loving husband, James MacNeil; father, James Mulberry; mother, Elizabeth Mulberry; and infant brother, James Mulberry.
Judy is survived by her children, James Jr. (Kathy) MacNeil, Julie Chambers, and Jill (Michael Gregory) MacNeil; grandchildren, Eryn (Eleni) Irrera, John (Becca) MacNeil, Andrew Chambers, Connor Boothroyd, Rylee Sidle, and Joshua Sidle; and great-granddaughter Raylinn Ainsworth.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 375 George Rd., Freeville, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Portzline Day Program, 46 Cortland St., Homer, NY, 607-299-4045, portzlinedayprogram@gmail.com.
