Karhn C. White

October 5, 1947 — October 22, 2016

Karhn Cheek White, of Ithaca, NY passed away on October 22nd, 2016. Born October 5th 1947 in Kenosha, WI, she grew up in Kenosha and Akron, OH with six brothers and a sister. In 1969 she married Stephen E. White and settled in New York City, where her daughter Sophie C. White was born in 1984. She retired to Ithaca in 2013 after teaching at P.S. 154 in the Bronx for 20 years. She enjoyed the clean air and beautiful surroundings upstate after suffering many afflictions to her health, largely resulting from exposure to toxic ashes that inundated her Lower Manhattan loft on 9/11/01.

Prior to teaching, she had been a free-lance graphic designer. She also participated in artistic events, such as the Avant Garde festivals, founded by Charlotte Moorman. In 1973 she and her husband moved into the 8th floor loft at 1 Hudson Street where they lived for 40 years. A member of the steering committee of the Lower Manhattan Loft Tenants Association, she was present at the signing of the Loft Law by Governor Carey in 1982.

She was beloved by her many friends and family members, and admired by her many young students. Karhn was predeceased by her parents, "Susan" Helen Jane and William Nez Cheek. She is survived by her husband, her daughter, siblings William, Thomas, Robert, Sarah, Paul, Christopher and Todd, many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service for family and friends will be in the spring.
