KENNETH R. ABBEY
, age 84, of Ringwood Road, Freeville, NY passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at the Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca, NY.
Mr. Abbey was born Nov. 24, 1927 in Owego, NY a son of the late Charles Edward and Pauline Cook Abbey. “Ken” was raised and attended school in Candor and Ithaca before joining the US Army, serving in from 1945 to 1947 WW II.
He was employed as a carpenter at Cornell University, retiring in 1988 after 40 years service. On Sept. 15, 1951 he was married to the former Doris Schutt.
Ken enjoyed woodworking, bowling, race cars, deer hunting, watching football and spending time helping family and friends. He coached junior bowling and girls youth softball.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Doris Abbey at home, his children, Glenda (David Ross) Abbey of Dryden, Ellen (George) Shank, of Freeville, Vicky (Thomas) Ahola of Freeville, Roy (Laurie) Abbey of Brooktondale, NY, Sheila (Joseph) VanDeWeert of Marathon; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his siblings, Paul “Skip” and Ward “Punk” Abbey, Eleanor Hallett, Vivian Weber and Gertrude Howser.
