LAWRENCE R. DAY, age 88, of 25 Lake Street, Dryden, NY died Thursday, March 1st, 2007 at the Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, NY after a brief illness. "Larry" was born June 10, 1918 in Rochester, NY a son of the late Floyd and Georgia Grant Day. He was graduated from Dryden High School in 1936. In 1941 he entered the US Army, 8th Armored Division and served his country honorably in the European Theater during WW II. Larry was a member of the Leonard T. Spaulding, Post 1134, American Legion and the Dryden Township Post 8158, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Upon returning home from the war he became employed at Allen Wales, which became National Cash Register. Later he was employed at Smith Corona, retiring as a tool and die maker. In retirement he worked for Ceracche Cable Television. An avid sportsman, he played basketball until age 81 and participated in the Empire Senior Games at Cortland receiving an award for being the number one basketball player in New York State. Larry was also an avid stock car racing fan and traveled to the Daytona 500 for more than 20 years. Years ago he was a stock car driver at the Glen Aubrey, Ithaca-Dryden Speed Way and Chemung Speedway. Larry was an enthusiastic supporter of high school athletics throughout all of his years.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Eleanor VanMarter Day at home; two daughters, Karen (William) Cleveland of Cortland and Diane Wilson of Katy, Texas; his sister, Vivian Matinez-Vidal of Carlisle, PA; grandchildren, Holli Goddard, Sarah FitzPatrick-Taylor, Amanda FitzPatrick; one great-granddaughter, Caitlynn Taylor; nieces and nephews.

Graveside services, to be held in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden, will be announced at a later date. There are no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden.
