Leila D. Cornish

LEILA D. CORNISH, age 87, a long time Cortland, NY resident passed away, Tuesday, April 3, 2007 just 13 days short of her 88th birthday at the Cortland Care Center after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Cornish was born April 16, 1919 in Chatsworth, GA a daughter of the late John and Lillie May Worley Findley. She was graduated from Cartersville High School in Cartersville, GA and enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps, US Army on April 21, 1943. PFC Leila Worley was a Medical Technician and met her husband, the late Arthur Cornish, while stationed at Fort Hancock, NJ. After World War II ended Mr. and Mrs. Cornish returned to Ithaca, NY and later relocated to Cortland. She was a member of the United Community Church of Cortland.

Survivors include her children, Richard (Genevieve) Cornish of Arizona City, AZ, Patricia (Jeff) Noeker of Rome, NY, David Cornish of Austin, TX, Susan Park of Cortland and Melanie (Jim) Field of McGraw, NY; grandchildren, Lori (Sean) Quail of Marathon, R,J. (Kathleen) Weibly of Pheonix, AZ, Jeff (Sarah) Weibly of Dryden, Bill O’Brien of Cortland, Shane O’Brien of Cortland, Kevin O’Brien of Phoenix, AZ, Jessica , Julie and Emma Leila Cornish of Austin, TX, Melissa (Duane) Hollenbeck of Pitcher, John "Butch" Park of Pitcher, Nikki (Brian) Kaltenbach of McGraw, Matthew and Allison Field of McGraw; eight great-grandchildren including "Binky"; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband and two sisters.

Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, April 7th, 2007 at the United Community Church of Cortland, with Rev. Matthew Medford officiating. There are no calling hours. Burial will follow in Cortland Rural Cemetery. Members of the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team will provide Military Honors at the grave. Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY assisted the family. Memorials are graciously directed to the United Community Church, 19 Church St., Cortland, NY 13045.
