Lloyd Edgar Foss

October 7, 1925 — June 12, 2016

Lloyd Edgar Foss, 90, of Stewartsville, New Jersey died Sunday evening June 12, 2016. Lloyd (Fisher, Dad, Papap, Poppop) was born on October 7, 1925 in Easton, Pennsylvania, son of the late Arthur C. and Augusta C. (Courtright) Foss.

Lloyd was the elder of two and he and his sister Irma (Foss) Sosnovik were well known throughout Stewartsville and surrounding communities. He attended Stewartsville Elementary School and Phillipsburg High School, class of 1943. Growing up in the Depression had a great impact on his character and dedication to service. As a young boy he worked for various local farmers picking tomatoes, strawberries, husking corn, pulling mustard plants, etc. He would help his family by selling homemade breads, vegetables, and poultry products door to door. Later, as he got older, he worked for the Stewartsville Road Department shoveling snow from streets and roads before there were snowplows.

As a high school student, he joined the Aircraft Warning Service at the beginning of World War ll. In 1943, while a student at Lafayette College, Lloyd was drafted into the Army to serve in World War II. He fought as a Combat Infantryman in 63rd Division (Blood and Fire) Company "B", 255th Infantry Regiment for 3 ½ years in the European Campaign. Having been captured by the German Army, escaped and taken strategic plans from his capturer, he received a Bronze Medal for his bravery and contribution to the success of the war. Incidentally, he was also captured by the Soviet Army while guarding a train passing through East Germany from Berlin, most likely making him one of the only Americans to be captured by German and Soviet Forces and getting away from both! Dad was always prepared to share war and life stories of his adventures.

He received an honorable discharge in 1946 after staying in an Army Hospital for a foot injury. He utilized the GI Bill and graduated from Lafayette College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. In 1960, Lloyd graduated from Lehigh University with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree. He received his Professional Engineer License the same year.

Lloyd worked as a Licensed Professional Engineer for over 3o years, serving as a Mechanical Inspector for Bethlehem Steel, a Test Engineer and Design Engineer for Ingersoll Rand, a Research Manager for American Newspaper Publishers Association Research Institute and ended his professional career as the Vice President of Newsprint Purchasing for the Hearst Corporation in New York City. He was highly regarded as an expert in the newsprint industry as he published several articles in journals and was a keynote speaker at several world association conferences. Throughout his career, he was afforded the opportunity to travel the world extensively spending much time in Europe, Scandinavia and Canada. He has traveled to 47 states in the US.

Lloyd lived his life serving others and his community. He loved Greenwich Township and volunteered thousands of hours of selfless service in the following capacities; 6 years in the US Army Reserves, Boy Scout Leader, Commander of the American Legion Mecsey Bishop Post 456, President of the Home Association Building for the American Legion Post, Commander of the Warren County American Legion, Chairman of the Plans and Construction Committee for the First Lutheran Church in Stewartsville, Chairman of the Greenwich Township Board of Planning and Building, President of the School Board during the construction of the Stewartsville Elementary School, 40 years as Secretary of the Greenwich Township Board of Adjustment, 30 years as Member and Vice Chairman of the Greenwich Township Planning Board, 6 years on the Greenwich Township Environmental Board, over 15 years as Secretary of the Greenwich Township Senior Citizens, Vice Chairman of the Greenwich Township Senior Citizens, 7 ½ years as a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Riegelsville, Pennsylvania, Chairman of the Red Cross and Cancer Awareness Drives for Greenwich Township as well as many other roles throughout his 90 years as a resident of Stewartsville.

Although Lloyd had an incredible career and life of service, he most enjoyed the time he spent with his family. In 1950, Lloyd married the love of his life, Carolyn A. Schroeder on December 27, at St. Joseph's Church in Easton, Pennsylvania. He and Carolyn were married for 53 years, had seven children and 22 grandchildren. He was a dedicated family man. He shared his many interests with each of his children and grandchildren from gardening, fishing, bowling, quoits, hunting, pinochle, clamming, storytelling, photography, coin collecting and his ultimate favorite hobby: stamp collecting- a hobby that he learned from his mother at age 10 and participated in until the week of his death. Lloyd was a lifetime member of the American Philatelic Society.

He always looked forward to his annual hunting trips to Maine. He earned membership into the Maine Big Buck Club 7 times and the Maine Black Bear Club three times, one of those being the biggest bear in the state of Maine in 1969. His life philosophy was "No Dull Moments."

Loved ones that cleared the path to heaven for Lloyd are his wife, Carolyn A. (Schroeder) Foss; son, Andrew T. Foss, Sr. and daughter-in-law Lyne LaFlamme Foss and three grandchildren, Taylor, Nathan and Emily Davis. Loved ones that will miss Lloyd are his daughter, Mary Lou Unangst; son, Lloyd E.
