Marion Louise Houston (nee Scott); 95 years old, died peacefully on Friday January 28, 2022 at the Thompkins County Hospicare in Ithaca, NY. She is predeceased by her husband Warren Pershing Houston. They shared nearly 62 years of marriage together.
Born in Elmira, NY on September 27, 1926, she was the daughter of Fay Roland Scott and Bertha Moretta (nee Rorick). She graduated from Southside High School and then Business school in Elmira. She went onto work as a medial secretary and also wrote obituaries for the Elmira Star Gazette during WW2.
It is hard to describe Marion without including the loving dedication that she shared with her husband Warren. They self reported that they never spent so much as one weekend apart from each other in all their years of marriage. Marion valued creating a warm and inviting environment of her home and hosted countless dinners, picnics and campfires at their lake home for family and friends over the years. She could be counted on to put her whole self into these gatherings, an example of this being making everything in her children's Easter baskets, from homemade chocolates to cupcakes with spring scenes created through layers of colored icing. Then Warren would design extravagant scavenger hunts to hide the baskets and complete the magical scene for the family. Marion loved making and eating desserts, especially peanut butter pie. She passed on recipes and stories from her parents and generations past, keeping them alive. In her latter years, she repeatedly voiced how lucky she felt to have lived long enough to spend time with her great-grandchildren.
Warren and Marion first met at an afternoon of ice skating on the Chemung River soon before Warren was to leave for basic training and then deployment in Europe for WW2. After the war, they were married on September 20, 1947 and Marion then dedicated her time to raising their two children, Donald and Carol in Elmira, NY. They built a cottage on Keuka lake where summers were spent with family and friends for many years. In 1972 they built a house across from the cottage and from then on lived permanently at their Keuka Lake residences. She used to call their homes on Keuka Lake 'our own little slice of heaven'. Marion and Warren were known to keep a wide circle of friends and neighbors as close as family throughout their lives. Together with her husband, Marion was also a member of the Izaak Walton League, Yates County Chapter and enjoyed square dancing. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Elmira, NY and then St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Penn Yan, NY. She will be remembered for her grace, tireless dedication to family and passing on the value of spending time with people who matter.
She is predeceased by her sister Geraldine May Lowe (nee Scott) (Kenneth Lowe). She is survived by her son Donald of Rochester, NY(predeceased by his wife Cathy), grandson Charlie, her daughter Carol of Ithaca, NY (Stephen Wright) and grandchildren Jennifer (Christopher Ruscio) of Les Montils, France, Taylor of Clifton Springs, NY and Ryan, also of Clifton Springs, NY. She has 5 great-grandchildren: Even, Nova, Emil, Madison, and James and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Marion's remains will be interred together with her husband's in the Veteran's Memorial Wall in Woodlawn National Cemetary, Elmira, NY to be determined at a future date. Donations may be made to the Thompkins County Hospicare in Ithaca, NY in her memory.
