Martha Howe

MARTHA HOWE, age 94, passed away on December 28, 2004 after a long illness. She was born February 28, 1910 in Lexington, Virginia, the daughter of the late William S. Moore and Annie Turk Moore. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank B. Howe, Jr. and her brother, W. Roscoe Moore. Martha is survived by her three children, a son Frank B. Howe III, and daughters Georgia A. Howe (Claude ‘Skip’ Hewitt) and Rebecca F. Howe (the late Michael Dekin), and her grandchildren, Leah and Atalia Howe and Matthew and Gregory Hewitt. She is also survived by her brother, Robert G. Moore (‘Libby’).

A graduate of Longwood College and trained as a teacher, Martha taught at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. During World War II she worked as a hostess in the Army, where she met her husband Frank. After the war ended, they moved to his hometown of Ithaca, where they raised their family. She was an active volunteer in the community and at her children’s schools, and served on the School Board of the Willow Creek School. She worked for many years in the family’s real estate and insurance business and later worked at the Cornell Daily Sun office where she was a ‘surrogate Mom’ to many students.

Martha was a devoted and loving mother to her three children. Although her lengthy illness prevented her from knowing her grandchildren, they knew her through the love and respect their parents, aunts and uncles had for them, for one another, and for the greater community. In these ways Martha continues to live on.

The family offers a special thank you to the staff at Lakeside Nursing Home for their loving care for Martha over many years.

There are no calling hours, funeral or graveside services. Burial will be with her family in the East Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 1700, Chicago, Illinois 60601-7633 or to the charity of your choice. Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY assisted the family.
