ITHACA – Mary Cox DeKay,
of Ithaca, passed away peacefully at Groton Nursing Home on June 8, 2010, her 82nd birthday. Born in Ithaca, NY, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Robina Coleman Cox, formerly of Glasgow, Scotland.
Mary was a telephone operator for many years at New York Telephone in Ithaca. She retired from the Ithaca School District bus garage as the secretary to the director of transportation. She was very athletic, a cheerleader and a gymnast at Ithaca High School, graduating in 1947. She also rode and broke horses in her teen years and she enjoyed playing golf in leagues around the area. Mary, being very friendly and outgoing, made and kept many friends, from school days and beyond. She was also very generous and contributed to many charities.
Mary is survived by her brother, Robert Cox of Dryden and his wife, Joan and many nieces and nephews who loved their aunt, “Mamy”. She was predeceased by her parents and Cecelia, wife of Richard Griffen.
Memorial services will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at Perkins Funeral Home, 55 W. Main St., Dryden with Rev. Tom Miller officiating. Interment will be in South Hill Cemetery, Coddington Road, Ithaca at a later date. www.perkinsfuneralhome.com
