MURIEL WOLCOTT , age 95, formerly of East Main St., Dryden, NY died Sunday, January 23, 2005 at Oak Hill Manor Nursing Home in Ithaca, NY after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. Mrs. Wolcott was born Feb. 25, 1909 at Ellington, NY to Willis and Rosa Alverson White. She graduated from Ellington High School in 1926 and received a teaching certificate from the Randolph Teacher’s Training Class of 1927. After teaching in a rural school in Clear Creek, she graduated with a BS in Home Economics from the University of Minnesota in 1933 and later received a MS degree from Syracuse University in 1941. Muriel taught Home Economics courses in Celoron, Mayville, Dryden, Virgil and Cortland City Schools from where she retired in 1971. On September 7, 1946 she was married to Harold Wolcott who passed away April 29, 1998. Muriel was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church of Dryden and also was a member of the Alumni Associations in Minnesota and Syracuse as well as the NYS Retired Teacher’s Association. Additionally she had been a member of the Dryden Literary Club, The Dryden Township Historical Society and the Dryden Senior Citizens.

Survivors include her brother, Maurice White and his wife Mary in Jamestown, NY; one sister, Mary Alice Hills of Redmond, Oregon; her sister, Grace Bosworth of Randolph, NY, died in the fall of 2004 and is survived by her husband, Herman Bosworth. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Memorial services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the United Methodist Church of Dryden. Rev. David H. Nicholls will officiate. All are invited to refreshments to be served in the fellowship hall following the service. Interment will be later in Cortland Rural Cemetery, Cortland, NY. Those wishing to remember Muriel are asked to consider a memorial gift in her name to the Southworth Library, P.O. Box 45, Dryden, NY or the United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 193, Dryden, NY 13053. Arrangements are entrusted to the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY 13053.
