Philip P. Hurst "Flip", "Poppy"

Flip died Wednesday, January 20, 2016, after declining health. Born on April 14, 1933 to Dorothy (Kinch) and Clifford Hurst, Flip was a lifelong resident in the Town of Dryden growing up in Freeville. He and his wife Betty (Purcell) Hurst, married 63 years, raised their four children in Freeville.
Flip had a wonderful sense of humor. His greatest hobby was enjoying time spent with his family creating memories. He was very likeable and a friend to all. An avid sports enthusiast with baseball being a favorite he enjoyed keeping the score book for games, whether it be high school or the professional leagues. Being a loyal Yankees fan, he enjoyed the ribbing with his son-in-law Steve, an Astro's fan.

Flip retired from SCM (Smith Corona) starting as a stock chaser working his way up to a supervisor. After retirement he kept busy with various activities such as metal detecting, sharpening tools, wood working, traveling, and working various part-time jobs with the Dryden Central School District, The Shopper, and, The Villages of Freeville and Aurora. He was a Charter member of the WB Strong Fire Department in Freeville holding various offices and was also a former Freeville Village Trustee.

Beside his loving wife, Flip leaves behind his children Pamela (Gary) Tingley, Gail (Steve) Hall, Susan Hurst , Lisa (Steve) Stelick, Jr.; sister Linda (Lewie) Stuttle; sister-in-law Josephine Hurst; grandchildren Brandon (Ellen) Stelick, Travis (Cheryl) Stelick, Trevor (fiancée Megan Murawski) Stelick, Kendra Stelick, Andrew (Sara) Young, Amy (Ryan) Kelsey, Jason (Mariah) Young, Gregory (Sarah) Hall, Geoffrey Hall; 13 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Flip was predeceased by his parents; his siblings Maxine Hurst, Donald (Ann) Hurst, Fred (Elma) Hurst, Walter Hurst, Judy Fairbanks; and, his son-in-law Johnny Martin.

Funeral services will be held at 12 PM, Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. David C. Robinson officiating. Friends are invited to call from 10 AM to 12PM at the funeral home, 55 West Main Street, Dryden. Burial, delayed until spring, will be in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one's choice or to the Freeville W.B. Strong Fire Department, P.O Box 129, Freeville, NY 13068-0129.
