RICHARD E. “Dick” WILLIAMS, age 84, formerly of 188 North West Road, Homer, NY passed away Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 at the Groton Nursing Facility after a period of declining health. “Dick” was born March 20, 1927 in Ithaca, NY son of the late Ezra and Nettie Westfall Williams. A 1945 graduate of Dryden High School, Dick played on the 1944 and 1945 championship basketball teams. Following graduation he answered the call of his country by enlisting in the US Army where he served until 1947 with the Army of Occupation, Following graduation

He answered the call of his country by enlisting in the US Army where he served until 1947 with the Army of Occupation, 382nd Military Police Battalion in Bremen, Germany. After returning to the US he married the former Carolyn Jean McKinney with whom he enjoyed 53 years until her death on October 24, 2002. “Mr. Williams” was employed at Smith Corona for 43 years and retired as a Methods Engineer. Dick and Carolyn joined the Cortland Country Club in 1957 and enjoyed the many friends that they met at country club events. Additionally, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Homer, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A special thank you is offered to the folks at Walden Place and Groton Nursing Facility for your care and kindness.Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Frances Mary Schutt, Joyce M. Perkins and Eleanor Monroe; several nieces and nephews and many friends including the Roger Diamond family; and his “guy friends” with whom he enjoyed breakfast for many years.Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Monday, Dec. 5, 2011 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. Suzanne Block officiating. Burial, with Military Honors provided by members of the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team, will follow in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Friends are invited to call from 3 to 4 PM Sunday and from 12 to 1 PM Monday at the funeral home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY.
