ROBERT E. HUGHES, age 98, formerly of Freeville, NY passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2014 at the Groton Nursing Facility after a period of declining health. "Bob? was born in Ithaca, NY on February 29, 1916, a son of the late William and Nina Palmer Hughes. He was employed for 42 years at Morse Chain/Borg Warner in Ithaca and was the proprietor of Hughes Guns in Freeville for many years. His wife, Mable Van Arkel Hughes, died in 2002. Bob was an experienced hunter and enjoyed many big game hunts in Kenya, Africa and the North American Continent including three trips to Alaska. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes enjoyed winters in Florida and Texas. Bob was a life member of the Groton Gun Club, the Tompkins County Fish and Game Club and the NRA. He enjoyed many years of participation in local Trap and Skeet leagues.
Survivors include his daughter, Shirley Hughes Humphrey Burlingame of Blossvale, NY and his son, William Hughes of Freeville; six grandchildren, Darby (Joyce Brown) Humphrey, Julie (Dennis) Totman, Timothy Humphrey, Wendy (Thomas) Pitman, Robin (Glenn) Dellinger, Robert "Danny? Hughes; several great and great great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Leland Hughes and his sister, Gertrude Scott and a grandson, Brian Humphrey.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family with interment in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Perkins Funeral Home assisted the family. Memorials may be made to the charity of one?s own choice. www.perkinsfuneralhome.com
