Ruth Joyce Metcalf

RUTH JOYCE METCALF, 77, of 136½ Clinton Ave., Cortland died Wednesday May 21, 2008 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center. She was surrounded by

family, friends and the wonderful staff of 2 South. Ruth was born June 13,

1931 in her parent's home in Virgil, NY to Marion and Marian Blanchard

Metcalf. Ruth attended school in Virgil. She was employed at Smith Corona,

Heavy Duty Dowser, Marietta and drove bus for the Cortland County Senior

Citizens. Ruth's hobbies were bowling and softball. Having played over 20

years in the Cortland Ladies league for the King Cole and Frank,'s Inn. The

last few seasons she and Patricia Vinnedge were honorary members of the

Geared 2 Sports Softball Team. Ruth devoted many years to the feeding, care,

spaying/neutering of many of the city's cats. Thanks to Ruth and Pat over 30

animals have been spayed/neutered. Many more found homes. She was always

willing to help any one at any time. As her siblings passed she became a

surrogate parent to many. We will all miss her very much.

Ruth is survived by her friend of over 55 years Patricia Vinnedge; nieces,

Mary Lou Bordwell, Vicki M. Chamberlain, Shelly M. Ferguson; nephews, Steven

Bordwell, Richard, Douglas, Michael and Jeff Metcalf all of the Cortland

area, nieces Susan B. Marcanio of LaTrobe, PA, Deborah M. Chapman of

Ellaville, GA, Cathy M. King of West Virginia; nephews, Kurt Bordwell of Mt.

Airy, NC, and Wayne Metcalf of E. Makala, Fl. Also surviving are an uncle

Nelson and an aunt Florence Blanchard, an aunt Beulah Vincent and a

sister-in-law, Joyce Metcalf all of Cortland as well as friends Eileen

Fezza, Santa Seamans and Catherine Cotterill, Vinnie, Tillie, Buttons, Zoey,

Jody and Buffie. She was predeceased by her parents Marion Blanchard Metcalf

and Marion Metcalf, a sister Elizabeth Bordwell; brothers, Ronald, Norman

and Paul; a niece, Jill M. Scutt, and her dog Nika.

Friends may call at the Perkins Funeral Home in Dryden, NY on Tuesday, May

27th at 1:00 PM. The funeral will begin at 2:00 PM with interment in the

Willow Glen Cemetery in Dryden, NY.
