Salvador “Pete” Barber, age 91, of Harford, NY passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at University Hospital after a brief illness. Pete was born August 14, 1926 in Duane, NY a son of the late Sam and Catherine Clough Barber. Pete served in the US Army during World War II and later received his High School Diploma in 2004. In June of 1948 he was married to the former Lois Fellows who passed away on March 5, 2016.
He was a Master Craftsman and was self employed for many years. Pete held a Private Pilot license and flew his own plane. In recent years he enjoyed working in his shop and building and flying radio controlled airplanes. Other activities over the years included boating, camping, golfing, playing cards and being an avid fan of his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sports endeavors. He was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church, Ithaca Radio–Controlled Flying Club, American Legion and the VFW. Pete was the last surviving Charter Member of the Harford Fire Company where he was named Firefighter of the Year in 1979 and 1988. In 2003, at the 50th Anniversary of the fire company, he received a trophy for his 50 years of service. For several years Pete and Lois wintered in Frostproof, FL where he enjoyed golf, cards, shuffleboard and many wonderful friendships. Pete was proud of his family and friends and felt blessed for the life he had lived. Pete often stated “I don’t know what people would do without family”.
Survivors include his daughters, Linda Barber of Dryden, Rosemary (Dana Seamans) Barber of Killawog, Darlene (Steven) Phillips of Marathon; grandchildren, Charles Phillips, Jolene (Jordan) Betts, Alissa (Jay Faber) French, Megan (Joe) Reeder; seven great-grandchildren, Gabreella, Brenden, Bentley, Ava, Ryder, Blake, Eli; his sisters, Anita (Ron Landers) Dedrick and Carol Barber; a sister-in-law, Camilla Winchell; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Donald Barber, Sr. and a sister, Shirley Layaw.
Memorial services will be held at 1 PM, Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Pastor Stephanie Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Friends are invited to call from 11 AM to 1 PM, Tuesday, at the funeral home, 55 West Main St., Dryden. Memorials are graciously directed to the Harford Fire Company, P.O.
