SIBLEY ALANSON STEWART, age 91, of North Road, Freeville, NY passed away Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health. Sibley was born March 13, 1923 in Whitney Point, NY, a son of the late Harold and Gladys Arnold Stewart. A 1942 graduate of Dryden High School, “Sib” was a dairy farmer on Lake Road, Dryden until 1970 when he became employed at the Town of Dryden as Zoning Officer; at the same time he was a bus driver for the Dryden Schools. He retired in 1986 and continued to drive school bus part time through 1994. In his early retirement years he was also a volunteer driver for Gadabout. His first wife, Barbara Mead Stewart, to whom he was married on August 16, 1947, passed away on June 4, 1981. On October 16, 1993 he was married to Letha Hatfield Sutton. Sib was a member of the Dryden United Methodist Church for eighty years and sang in the church choir for many years. He was a member of several community organizations including the Dryden Senior Citizens, a seventy year member of the Dryden Grange, a seventy year member of Dryden Lodge #472, F.& A.M. and he was a volunteer and member of the Town of Dryden Historical Society. For a few years in retirement he also sang with the Ithacords barbershop chorus. Sib enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer; he was a member of the Stone Hedges Golf Course and former member of the Dryden Lake Golf Course.
Survivors include his wife, Letha Sutton of Freeville, his sons, Alanson J. Stewart of New Port Richey, FL and Randall K. Stewart of Dryden; a granddaughter, Jennifer R. Stewart of New Port Richey; stepson, W. Mark (Cynthia) Sutton of Dryden; son-in-law, David L. Lane of Endwell; step grandchildren Adam (Adrienne) Sutton and Jaclyn Sutton. He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara; his daughter, Corinne Stewart Lane and his step-daughter, Sharon Sutton Snyder.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Dryden United Methodist Church with Pastor Harold Wheat officiating. Burial, delayed until spring, will be in Green Hills Cemetery, Dryden. Friends are invited to call Friday at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main Street from 4 to 7 PM. Members of Dryden Lodge #472 will conduct Masonic Services at 6:45 PM, Friday, at the funeral home. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, are directed to the Dryden United Methodist Church, P.O.
