Walter L. Blodgett Sr.

January 14, 1934 — May 25, 2024

Walter L. Blodgett Sr., passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 25, 2024. He was 90

years old.

The son of the late Walter and Eva Blodgett, he was born in Springfield, Vermont on January 14,

1934. Walter was predeceased by his son Walter L. Blodgett, Jr. as well as his parents and

siblings. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 70 years, Florence I. Blodgett (Darling) and his

daughters Florence N. Whitford (Martin), June E. Feller (Jeffrey), Patricia D. Van Buren, and

Mary G. Nann. Walter also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many

nieces and nephews who all loved him dearly.

Walter was a man of unwavering faith, deep wisdom, and few words.

After completing high school in 1951 he went off to college at Bob Jones University in

Greenville, SC. In September 1953, Walter married his sweetheart, Florence and they moved to

Freeville, NY to live and work. He continued his seminary education at Baptist Bible Seminary in

Johnson City, NY. In 1956 he joined the Air Force where he spent time in San Antonio, TX,

Belleville, IL, Myrtle Beach, SC, Orlando, FL, and South Korea until his honorable discharge in

1960. In the following years Walter wore many hats including; television repairman, dry

cleaner, salesperson, truck driver/owner, and school teacher/principal.

Walter loved his family, fishing, music, and sports, especially the Yankees. He spent many years

coaching high school basketball, leaving a lasting impression on his players. He was a member,

deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir director at Brooktondale Baptist Church for many

decades.

A service in celebration of Walter’s life will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at

Brooktondale Baptist Church, 2311 Slaterville Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850.

The family asks that flowers not be sent as Walter’s widow, is highly allergic. Contributions in
